Inside Chiang Mai: Shopping

There are plenty of shopping opportunities throughout Chiang Mai, ranging from street side vendors selling local arts and crafts, to upscale shops selling precious stones.

One of the most interesting places to go shopping is the Sunday market, which is held every Sunday evening on a group of blocked off streets in the center of town. Local vendors from the area gather to sell goods to tourists from all over the world. The list of things sold is large, but includes handmade jewelry, photography, clothing, paintings, fresh fruit, drinks (alcoholic and non), hats, toys and much more. Check out some pictures of the market to get a better idea of what it looks like.

Don't worry if visiting during a Sunday is not an option, because the local night market (called the Night Bazaar) is open for business seven days a week. The array of goods available for purchase is huge. This is a main attraction in the city of Chiang Mai and is worth the visit. For more information, check out Night Bazaar .

There are plenty of jewelry shops around Chiang Mai, many of which specialize in selling Jade. Although good deals can be found at many of these locations, be aware that gem scams do occur. Tourists every year report paying way too much for jewelry purchased in Thailand. Do some research before buying anything expensive.
